EASTERN CAPE — A massive multi-agency search operation in the Eastern Cape has successfully concluded after four stranded SAPS officers were located safe and sound following a tense night in the remote Baviaanskloof wilderness. The Public Order Policing (POP) unit members, who lost contact with dispatch yesterday evening, were finally tracked down late this morning.
The four Gqeberha-based officers—Warrant Officer Martin Fourie, alongside Constables Lyle Fondling, Azola Mgoduka, and Imraan Moosa—had been dispatched to secure the region and maintain stability ahead of the highly anticipated TransBaviaans cycling race.
The emergency unfolded while the team was returning from their event duties. Their police patrol vehicle became hopelessly bogged down on the rugged terrain of the Baviaanskloof route. The situation was immediately compounded by a total communications blackout; with zero cellphone reception in the deep kloof, the team was entirely cut off from sending a distress signal or calling for a tow.
Demonstrating textbook survival protocols, the officers made the decision to abandon their immobilized vehicle. They hiked on foot to a nearby nature reserve, where they established a secure shelter and waited out the night until search crews could reach them.
The breakthrough in the search effort came at approximately 08:30 this morning when rescue teams finally made visual contact. Authorities confirmed that all four men emerged from the ordeal completely unharmed and are currently receiving standard post-incident care and administrative attention.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata served as the lead spokesperson for the South African Police Service, addressing the successful outcome and praising the collaborative rescue effort.
