FREE STATE – A major Bram Fischer International Airport drug arrest has led to the detention of a 36-year-old woman attempting to smuggle suspected crack cocaine on a scheduled flight to Johannesburg. The interception underscores coordinated operational efforts by airport security and law enforcement to disrupt illicit trafficking networks.
The operation commenced on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at approximately 11:26, when an Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) Supervisor notified the Visible Policing Unit about anomalous materials flagged by an airport scanning machine. Officers responding to the alert were directed to a hairdresser doll head in the possession of the female traveler.
To ensure proper evidentiary procedures, experts from the Local Criminal Records Centre were summoned to process the scene. Upon opening the doll head, authorities extracted foam stuffing to reveal 232 stones suspected to be rock drug or crack cocaine. The contraband, carrying an estimated street value of R300,000, was meticulously counted in the presence of the suspect.
Following this discovery, a comprehensive body search was conducted, yielding an additional R93,220 in cash concealed on the suspect’s person. The 36-year-old woman was promptly placed under arrest at the airport.
A formal case docket detailing charges of drug possession, alongside an additional charge of money laundering, was registered at the Navalsig Police Station. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has been assigned to lead the probe. The accused is slated to make her initial appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court in the near future.
