TSHWANE – A coordinated Tshwane kidnapping and hijacking rescue operation has resulted in the apprehension of a 47-year-old suspect and the safe recovery of two victims. The breakthrough followed a high-speed police pursuit and an exchange of gunfire that concluded with a suspect vehicle overturning in Pretoria.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the criminal sequence began around 18:00 on 21 August 2026. Law enforcement units were deployed for crime prevention operations in the Tshwane region after receiving intelligence regarding the hijacking of an Omoda motor vehicle and the concurrent kidnapping of a man and a woman in Centurion.
The hijacked Omoda was shortly thereafter located abandoned by the perpetrators in Atteridgeville. Investigators quickly obtained fresh intelligence indicating the suspects and their captives had transferred into a black Audi. This vehicle was subsequently tracked near Block XX in Soshanguve, moving southward along the R80 Highway toward Pretoria.
Officers initiated strategic patrols along the Mabopane Highway and successfully identified the vehicle matching the description, prompting an immediate high-speed pursuit. The chase culminated near the Areyeng Bus Station on Paul Kruger Street, where the driver lost control, causing the Audi to overturn.
As the suspects bailed from the wrecked vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, an exchange of gunfire erupted between them and the responding officers. In the midst of the confrontation, both kidnapped victims managed to break free and escape the scene completely unharmed.
A comprehensive sweep of the vicinity, which included the bus station’s administrative offices, led to the capture of one suspect, aided by private security personnel. A search of the detained individual uncovered a bag containing a firearm with its serial number intentionally obliterated, alongside a 9mm magazine loaded with live ammunition. The weapon has been submitted for forensic analysis to investigate potential connections to broader criminal networks.
The 47-year-old detainee is scheduled to appear at the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026. He faces a docket of severe charges, including kidnapping, motor vehicle hijacking, possession of a hijacked vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Authorities emphasize that investigative efforts remain highly active as police work to track down the second suspect and fully reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the incident.
