Local households report being held hostage by unauthorized individuals who allegedly manipulate the neighborhood’s power grid, demanding cash payments to restore service after deliberate, illegal outages.
According to community members, a faction operating out of an adjacent informal settlement has effectively taken control of the suburb’s power supply. These individuals reportedly scale utility poles at all hours of the day and night, illegally severing and restoring electrical connections to specific homes to enforce their demands.
The interference is allegedly tied to a predatory, recurring fee. Residents claim they are forced to pay 150 rand each time their power is cut, describing the continuous demands as a blatant form of extortion. Instead of relying on official municipal or utility repairs, households feel they have no choice but to pay the unauthorized groups simply to keep their lights on.
Beyond the financial burden, this illicit activity is causing severe physical damage to the local grid. Community members note that the perpetrators bypass standard safety protocols by wiring connections directly into distribution units, locally known as “red boxes.” These reckless modifications routinely cause the boxes to overload and burst into flames, resulting in extended blackouts that can leave the community without power for days or even weeks.
The emotional and practical toll on the community is profound. A local resident, described the constant uncertainty and lack of reliable power as deeply traumatizing. She highlighted the severe disruption to daily life, noting that her own household recently endured a two-week blackout directly linked to the ongoing network sabotage.
Despite the widespread frustration, visible damage to public property, and the clear safety hazards posed by electrical fires, the situation remains unaddressed by the justice system. Residents have confirmed that, to date, no formal criminal cases have been lodged with law enforcement regarding the suspected extortion or the deliberate vandalism of the electrical network.
Community advocates are now urging local authorities and Eskom to intervene decisively before the escalating infrastructure damage and illegal syndicate activities lead to a complete service delivery collapse in the area.
