KLERKSDORP – A multi-disciplinary operation has successfully netted ten illegal miners in Klerksdorp following a coordinated law enforcement crackdown on alleged illicit mining activities and the unlawful possession of gold. Members of the Klerksdorp-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, working in close collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Jouberton SAPS, arrested ten suspects aged between 16 and 47 on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.
According to Colonel Adéle Myburgh, spokesperson for the police, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit received credible intelligence indicating that suspects were actively processing gold on a specific plot in Klerksdorp. Reports further indicated that trucks loaded with suspected gold-bearing material were observed entering the property, where the illicit processing was allegedly taking place.
Acting on this information, the joint task team operationalised the intelligence and swiftly proceeded to the scene. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered the ten suspects on the property, which resembled a farm. When confronted, the suspects attempted to flee the premises, but police units successfully managed to corner and apprehend them.
During the subsequent search of the premises, authorities seized multiple bags containing gold-bearing material, various pieces of mining equipment, and two vehicles linked to the operation.
All ten suspects are scheduled to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court in the near future. They will face formal charges of illegal mining, unlawful possession of gold, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
