JOHANNESBURG – The Johannesburg Flying Squad has successfully executed an intelligence-led raid in Bassonia, resulting in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of illegal firearms and ammunition by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
On Tuesday, 25 August 2026, acting on credible crime intelligence regarding illicit weapons, officers from the specialized unit targeted a residential property in the Bassonia area.
During the search of the premises, law enforcement officials recovered a significant cache of weapons. The seized items included two unlicensed rifles—specifically identified as a .308 rifle and a .22 rifle—alongside 5,000 rounds of ammunition spanning multiple calibres.
A SAPS spokesperson confirmed that a 32-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene. He has been formally arrested and charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
According to the police spokesperson, investigative procedures are actively ongoing to trace the origins of the weapons and determine if there are broader criminal networks involved. The detained individual is scheduled to make his first appearance before the local Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
