GAUTENG – Authorities have successfully apprehended Gauteng ATM bombing suspects after uncovering a significant stash of explosives linked to cash-in-transit (CIT) heists and illegal mining operations. This major breakthrough occurred during a targeted raid in Matholesville, Roodepoort, on Tuesday, 01 September 2026.
The arrests were the culmination of a highly coordinated, intelligence-led initiative. A specialized task force was deployed to intercept a suspected middleman allegedly funneling blasting materials to criminal syndicates. The joint effort brought together the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence division, the Ivory Park Task Team, the Gauteng Traffic SLEU, the West Rand Explosives Unit, and allied private security firms.
Acting on precise intelligence, the multidisciplinary team converged on a specific property in Matholesville. Inside, they located two men and one woman. A thorough search of the premises yielded a dangerous arsenal: 88 safety fuses, 62 blasting cartridges, and roughly 400 metres of detonating cord. Authorities estimate the street value of these recovered explosives at R160,000.
All three individuals, identified as Zimbabwean nationals, were taken into custody on charges of unlawful possession of explosives and are scheduled to appear in court in the near future. Additionally, investigators impounded a white Toyota Etios found at the scene, which was fitted with fraudulent registration plates, to aid in ongoing forensic inquiries.
Major General Fred Kekana, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Gauteng, publicly praised the collaborative effort of the specialized units, highlighting the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in dismantling dangerous criminal networks before they can execute further attacks.
Detectives are currently expanding their investigation to determine if the apprehended individuals are directly connected to a broader pattern of ATM bombings, CIT robberies, and illicit mining activities across the province.
