FREE STATE — A Bothaville pastor, identified as 39-year-old Vusimuzi Xapa, has been handed a life sentence for the rape of a minor, concluding a critical criminal case in the Free State. The severe judicial outcome underscores the regional justice system’s zero-tolerance approach to crimes against children and ensures the convicted clergyman is permanently removed from the community.
The final judgment was delivered by Magistrate Mahlatsi at the Bothaville Regional Court on Friday, 28 August 2026. This definitive sentencing follows Xapa’s formal conviction on the charge of rape, which was successfully secured by the state earlier on 26 August.
The successful prosecution was the result of a highly targeted, multi-agency effort. Following the suspect’s initial arrest, the complex docket was assigned to Warrant Officer Mandie Jacobs. Operating out of the Welkom Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Jacobs spearheaded the meticulous investigation required to build a robust case against the accused.
Working in tandem with law enforcement, Advocate Keke Machogo from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) carefully prepared and presented the state’s case. Their collaborative legal strategy ensured that the evidence met the stringent requirements necessary to obtain a maximum penalty for the severe offense.
In the wake of the trial’s conclusion, Lejweleputswa District Commissioner Major General (Dr) Tholie Afonso issued a formal statement praising the collaborative effort.
