NORTH WEST – A high-speed police chase through the streets of Potchefstroom culminated in a major dagga bust and the arrest of a suspected drug dealer, yielding 28 bags of cannabis with an estimated street value of R300,000.
The operation was initiated on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, following actionable intelligence received by the North West Crime Intelligence Provincial Overt Team, Potchefstroom Crime Prevention, and Belrex Security. The information indicated that a white Toyota Hilux was being actively utilized to transport illicit substances.
Law enforcement units successfully located the vehicle on Nelson Mandela Drive, in close proximity to a school. As officers attempted to intercept the bakkie, the driver allegedly ignored multiple red traffic lights and navigated recklessly through the town, evading initial efforts by law enforcement to halt the vehicle. The pursuit tracked the suspect toward the Mooirivier Mall area before moving into the Trim Park vicinity.
The chase concluded when the Toyota Hilux veered into a restaurant parking lot in the Trim Park area and collided with a fence. Officers from Potchefstroom Crime Prevention swiftly moved in to apprehend the suspect at the scene. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of the 28 bags of dagga, alongside the impoundment of the bakkie.
The arrested individual has been formally charged with dealing in drugs. The suspect is scheduled to make their first appearance at the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 7 September 2026.
North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, commended the law enforcement members and private security personnel for their coordinated efforts and swift response during the operation, highlighting the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in combating drug trafficking.
