NORTHERN CAPE – A suspected drug dealer was arrested in Kimberley after a misdelivered parcel inadvertently led the South African Police Service (SAPS) to uncover an illicit drug haul with an estimated street value of R195 000. The successful intelligence-driven operation was executed by the Northern Cape Provincial Organised Crime Unit, effectively disrupting a local narcotics supply chain.
The operation began at approximately 11:00 when police members were summoned to a local business in Kimberley. A courier company had allegedly delivered a parcel to the incorrect address. To safeguard the integrity of the package and facilitate a controlled delivery, an undercover police member posed as a courier agent.
The intended recipient was subsequently contacted, and arrangements were made to deliver the parcel directly to the suspect. The controlled delivery was successfully executed, leading to the immediate arrest of the 48-year-old foreign national. During the operation, authorities also seized the cellphone used to coordinate with the suspect. A search of the parcel revealed Tik and 300 Mandrax tablets concealed within a plastic bag. Additionally, a substantial amount of cash, believed to be the proceeds of illicit drug dealing, was found in the suspect’s possession and seized for further investigation.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the arrest and seizure. She described the operation as a clear indication of SAPS’s commitment to disrupting the illicit drug trade through intelligence-driven policing.
“This operation demonstrates the importance of following intelligence, acting decisively, and disrupting the supply chain that fuels drug-related crime in our communities,” Lieutenant General Otola stated.
The dismantling of illicit drug networks remains a top priority for law enforcement, as narcotics have a devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities, and are frequently linked to broader criminality. This bust aligns directly with the SAPS Reset Agenda, which places renewed emphasis on professional, intelligence-driven, and visible policing to enhance operational effectiveness and dismantle criminal networks.

The 48-year-old male suspect has been formally charged with dealing in drugs and is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court in the near future.
