MPUMALANGA – Two suspects were arrested in Nelspruit on Friday, 4 September 2026, after authorities discovered them in possession of explosives valued at approximately R130 000. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in Mpumalanga led the intelligence-driven disruptive operation.
The apprehended individuals include a 37-year-old undocumented foreign national and a 36-year-old South African citizen. The operation was executed by the Hawks’ Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) unit, with strategic support from National Crime Intelligence, Fidelity Security Services Head Office, Fairview Mine, and the Illicit Mining Operation Vikela Barberton.
Acting on specific intelligence from National Crime Intelligence indicating that two men possessed explosives and would be located near a lodge along the R40 in Nelspruit, authorities operationalized the information. At approximately 15:30, the tactical team received confirmation of the suspects’ presence at the identified lodge and subsequently located both men inside one of the rooms.
During the search, authorities recovered a substantial quantity of explosives, including 50 electric detonators, 80 blasting cartridges (Super Power 90 Zambia), and 32 connector cords, carrying an estimated street value of R130 000. Investigators also seized two cellular phones and a grey Hyundai i20 in which the suspects were travelling, retaining the vehicle for further investigation.
The DPCI Explosives Unit and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) attended the scene to provide necessary specialist assistance. A case has been officially opened at the Nelspruit Police Station, and the two suspects face charges of contravening the Explosives Act and the Immigration Act. They are expected to appear before the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
Major General Nico Gerber, Provincial Head of the DPCI in Mpumalanga, commended the multidisciplinary team for their swift response to the intelligence and the successful disruption of the alleged illegal possession of explosives.
