SOUTH AFRICA — South African citizens eligible to vote are being strongly urged by Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber to apply for or collect their Smart IDs ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections in November. A valid identity document remains the fundamental key to democratic participation, and the Department of Home Affairs has significantly expanded access to these critical services to help voters avoid last-minute complications.
Over the past five months, the Department has rapidly rolled out digitalised Smart ID services at more than 450 bank branches nationwide. Minister Schreiber emphasized that citizens should take full advantage of these vastly improved and accessible services to apply for and collect their identification documents without delay.
The Department also issued a direct call to individuals who have already submitted their applications but have not yet collected their IDs, urging them to retrieve their documents promptly. Additionally, citizens who need to replace a lost or damaged identity document ahead of the elections are advised to utilize either traditional Home Affairs offices or the extensive network of participating bank branches well before the election deadline.
To help the public navigate this expanded network, citizens are directed to visit the official online portal at myhomeaffairsonline.dha.gov.za to locate the nearest participating bank branch.
Beyond individual applications, the Department of Home Affairs is fostering a community-driven approach to voter readiness. Officials are encouraging citizens who already possess valid identity documents to actively assist and encourage family members, friends, and colleagues who do not yet have a Smart ID to apply and collect their documents before the November elections.
