As South African producers in food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceuticals settle their fourth-quarter plans for 2026, Cape Town equipment builder Acepak has laid out the complete range of machines it manufactures and supplies for the tail end of a production line. Many local plants use September to commit to what they will run through the festive ramp-up, and the company is taking that moment to demonstrate how its separate machine families work together instead of listing them one product page at a time. Acepak operates as a packaging machine manufacturer that designs, engineers, assembles and tests its equipment on South African soil, a job it has been doing for roughly four decades.
One line, several machine families
The back end of a packaging line is seldom just one machine. Once a product has been filled and labelled, it still needs to be collated, wrapped or cased, banded or sealed, and then stacked and secured for shipping. Acepak organises what it offers into six areas that line up with those steps: case packing, shrink wrapping, banding, pouch filling, palletising, and the integration work that ties them together. Laying the range out in this way is intended to ease the decision for a plant engineer who can see the bottleneck sits somewhere past filling but is unsure which class of machine will clear it.
This arrangement also mirrors the way the company sells. A producer rarely swaps out a whole line at once. Case packing and tray forming
The case packing group spans erectors, sealers and packers. Within it are pneumatic and servo driven case and carton erectors and sealers, which set up and seal cases without loading product automatically, plus end loaded case packers in which products travel in on infeed conveyors and are pushed into the case. For higher volumes there is the wrap around case packer, an inline machine that draws pre-scored cards in and times them to the arriving product. The family also features a robotic case packer fitted with pneumatic or magnetic grippers that pick product off the infeed and set it into preformed cartons.
Tray formers and erectors sit next to these. The automatic tray forming machine uses a die press to fold pre-scored cards around collated product, with hot glue securing the folds. Trays are still widely used in South African retail, especially for canned lines, dairy multipacks and shelf-ready displays, so a producer switching between case and tray formats can stay inside one range. Shrink wrapping across volume bands
Shrink wrapping is divided by throughput. At the entry level sits a sealer paired with a shrink tunnel for products that must be fully enclosed in film, together with a semi automatic shrink wrapper for operations that cannot warrant a fully automatic line. The automatic tier brings an L-sealer, a cross infeed shrink wrapper with a side product feed, a sleeve sealer and shrink tunnel, and an inline shrink wrapper with a lifter for products that need raising into place. A flightbar shrink wrapper deals with loose product in unsupported packs or on die-cut cardboard pads, relying on gated collation to group items before sealing. At the top end, a high speed system uses gated control to release a defined quantity of product and assemble packs from saved recipes.
The upshot of that range is that a beverage bottler producing multipacks and a small food maker wrapping trays are not steered towards the same machine. Recipe driven changeover counts for most where one line runs several pack formats within a shift, something that grows more common as retailers request more pack variations from a single producer.
Banding, pouch filling and palletising
Banding falls to the Bandall stand-alone modular banding machine, made for bundling jobs where a paper or film band does enough to hold a pack together without a full wrap. Its modular build supports a broad mix of configurations depending on the product size and where the band needs to go.
Pouch filling has expanded as a format across food and household goods, and Acepak addresses it at three levels. The automatic high volume pouch filler fills and seals blank stand-up pouches that are still open at the top, including formats carrying side-mounted spouts. The centre fitment pouch filler feeds pouches from a magazine rail into a rotary turret for accurate filling. A manual spout pouch filling and sealing system works from centre-folded film pulled off a roll, which fits shorter runs and trial products.
At the line’s end, palletising spans robotic palletisers built as fully automated cells complete with pallet magazines, automatic feed conveyors, layer sheet inserters and product handling, along with depalletisers carrying magnetic or pneumatic robotic heads that strip full pallets back onto an accumulation table. Stretch wrapping stretches from a semi automatic machine up to an automatic wrapper and a mobile robotic stretch wrapper that can be shifted between zones, which helps in a warehouse where wrapping points move with the season.
Integration and the parts most people forget
The integration category gathers the gear that links everything together: conveyors designed and built in house, ranging from gravity-driven roller conveyors and radius bends to an assortment of belt types; a stand-alone sleeve shrink tunnel for shrinking pre-applied sleeves or film onto bundled or individual products; a mechanical label and barcode applicator made for cases, outers and collated packs; and a pneumatically actuated trolley packer for inline automation. These are the pieces that determine whether a new machine genuinely lifts line output or just shifts the bottleneck a few metres down the line.
