To get it right, technical teams need to move beyond basic lift-and-shift patterns and align their architecture decisions with the business’s appetite for change.

Azure provides a rich set of tools to support both migration and modernisation, but the value lies in knowing how and when to use them. Azure Migrate can accelerate infrastructure moves, while services like Azure App Service, AKS, and Azure SQL modernise how applications run and scale. But none of these tools work in isolation.

Discovery and assessment cannot be skipped
Every successful cloud journey begins with a thorough assessment of the existing environment. This includes dependencies, application criticality, licensing entitlements, performance baselines, and security posture. These provide a scalable foundation that incorporates identity, network, resource management, policy, and monitoring.

Modernising data estate unlocks better insights, paves the way for AI, and enhances regulatory compliance. However, data migration needs to account for latency, integrity, and governance. Technical teams must consider whether datasets can be migrated directly or if they should be re-ingested through pipelines. They must also enforce consistent schema definitions and implement access policies aligned to sensitivity levels.
Monitor, optimise, and evolve
Once workloads are in Azure, the work is not over. Ongoing optimisation is key to delivering value. Azure Advisor, Cost Management, and Monitor provide real-time guidance, but technical teams must act on that intelligence. Regular reviews of performance, usage, and cost patterns help avoid waste and ensure resources remain aligned to business needs.
Modernisation should also be iterative. Start with foundational changes, then layer in advanced capabilities like AI services, machine learning, and automation as the organisation matures. This approach avoids overwhelm while still enabling innovation.
