DURBAN, KwaZulu-Natal — Three suspects were killed and a fourth critically injured following a high-speed Durban police pursuit that erupted after a targeted business robbery in Overport. The intense chase concluded with a fatal shootout on Mary Thipe Street in Manor Gardens, marking the end of a weeks-long crime spree that had heavily impacted the local business sector.
According to officials, the suspects had been actively terrorizing businesses across Durban over the past several weeks. Intelligence gathered by the South African Police Service (SAPS) district and metro tracing units, alongside provincial crime intelligence, indicated that the syndicate was planning another imminent hit. In response, law enforcement and private security teams were strategically positioned throughout the city to intercept the perpetrators.
The operation was triggered when a robbery call came through from a business in the Overport area. As the suspects fled the scene, a high-speed vehicle pursuit ensued. During the chase, the suspects allegedly fired multiple shots at responding officers, including members of the SAPS and the Marshall Security special operations team. The vehicle eventually came to a standstill, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left three suspects dead at the scene.
A fourth suspect survived the shootout and was immediately treated by paramedics for critical injuries. The area has since been cordoned off, with a stretch of the road closed to the public as forensic teams meticulously comb the scene for evidence to establish the exact sequence of events.
Andres Mateos, a spokesperson for Marshall Security, confirmed that the targeted enterprises were chosen based on vulnerability and prior planning by the criminal syndicate. He emphasized a critical message for the public: businesses that fall victim to criminal activity must formally open cases with the police.
“It is critically important that businesses who become victims of criminal activity open up cases,” Mateos stated. “When a case like this unfolds and there is a shootout with fatalities or arrests, those arrests will be significant during the conviction process. Open cases ensure that evidence can stand against the perpetrators in a court of law.”
Authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the syndicate’s activities. Law enforcement is urging any additional victims of recent business robberies in the Durban area to come forward and register official statements, noting that these reports are vital to supporting ongoing prosecution efforts and dismantling organized criminal networks.
