BUSHBUCKRIDGE, Mpumalanga — Escalating crime rates in Bushbuckridge are posing a severe threat to regional tourism, according to Ehlanzeni District Municipality Executive Mayor Terror Shabangu. Speaking at a recent District Development Model Imbizo in Hokwe Village, Shabangu highlighted that the surge in violent incidents is directly jeopardizing visitor numbers to the adjacent Kruger National Park and the broader local economy.
Shabangu emphasized that the district’s economy is heavily anchored on tourism, serving as a primary gateway to the world-renowned national park. He warned that if the high level of killings and violent crime continues, tourists will avoid the area. This decline in visitors, he noted, directly stifles the creation of vital job opportunities for local communities who rely on the tourism sector for their livelihoods.
The Imbizo, designed to address pressing service delivery challenges, drew mixed reactions from Hokwe Village residents. While some attendees expressed deep frustration over persistent water shortages and deteriorating road infrastructure—noting that road repairs often only occur temporarily ahead of official visits—others remained optimistic. Many residents voiced hope that the direct, face-to-face engagement with the mayor and his cabinet would lead to actionable, long-term solutions for their long-standing grievances.
Bushbuckridge Mayor Lydia Moroane reinforced the importance of the gathering, highlighting the multi-tiered government presence at the event. She noted that the collaboration between local leadership, district officials, the office of the Deputy Minister, and national representatives is crucial for meaningful progress.
“This Imbizo is going to help a lot,” Moroane stated. “We have national representatives, we have the office of the Deputy Minister, we have the office of the honorable MSC, as well as the district and ourselves. That collaboration from the local up to national will be able to help us so that whatever challenge that we are coming across, we mitigate and work together.”
District officials concluded the engagement by stressing that sustained, proactive collaboration between the government and local communities remains essential. Leaders emphasized that this unified approach is the only viable path to effectively tackle the multifaceted safety and service delivery challenges facing Bushbuckridge residents, while simultaneously safeguarding the region’s economic and tourism future.
