When a bottle and its cap are made in the same building, the fit stops being a matter of luck. That is the case Plastic Innovations is making this September, telling distributors and cooler suppliers that its dispenser caps and its PET bottle range are engineered as a single matched system, with closures and containers moulded together at one Sandton plant. The timing is deliberate: as South Africa moves into spring and the warmer months ahead, water businesses take stock of what is running on their routes.
Everything happens at 71 Galaxy Ave, Frankenwald, Sandton, where product design, mould design, final product moulding and assembly share a single floor. Plastic Innovations calls that floor completely horizontally integrated, and it describes itself as the biggest dispenser cap manufacturer on the continent. The practical upshot for a supplier filling and delivering to homes and offices is that the bottle, the neck finish and the closure can be specified as one, rather than bought from different sources and then relied on to line up.
A bottle range built around PET
On the container side, the business trades under DuraPET, its PET packaging range, which spans everything from preforms to finished large format bottles. The water dispenser bottles are moulded in 100% recyclable, BPA free PET that carries a density of 1 350 kg per cubic metre and a melting point of 260 degrees Celsius. Because PET is insoluble in water, and because the construction sidesteps weak points such as weld lines, a bottle keeps its structural integrity through repeated handling, the company says.
Several formats make up the range. Weighing 780g, the 18.9L Dispensor Handle Bottle carries an integrated PET handle that the company credits with an optimised strength to weight ratio, and its separate handle construction allows for effortless cleaning. The 18.9L Dispensor Bottle comes in at 720g, takes a minimalist shape, resists splitting and is built for repeated use cycles. At just 150g, the 10L Bottle is square shaped to make better use of storage space, has a 46mm neck and ships complete with a secure cap and wide grip handle, serving water alongside juices, oils, sauces and cleaning solutions. The Ladies 10L Handle Bottle weighs 460g and is shaped around a comfortable carrying handle.
Both 18.9l water bottles are pitched directly at cooler and dispenser duty, and the company presents the material as a food safe solution for that use. Ocean Blue and Crystal Clear run as the standard colours across the entire range, with additional colours available subject to minimum order quantities. The handle version sets aside a dedicated area for logo visibility, while the standard version leaves ample surface area for branding stickers.
Four closures, one bottle neck
It is in the cap range that the pairing becomes most obvious. Each of the four closures is made to fit 18.9 litre bottles, also known as 5 gallon, and each is moulded in LDPE with a density between 917 and 930 kg per cubic metre and a melting point of 110 degrees Celsius. Like the PET used for the bottles, LDPE is insoluble in water. Where the four differ is in how the cooler receives the bottle.
At 15g, the Hydrolock Non Spill cap reseals and relies on a specially designed inner washer system, with a tamper proof seal fitted as standard, and it ships in Royal Blue. The UniCap weighs 10.5g and features a four way window that tears cleanly into four equal sections, built for a spiked pot system cooler and supplied in Ocean Blue. Lightest of the group at 9g, the SnapCap comes in two configurations, with an inner washer or without, and the company says it is compatible with water cooler spikes of any profile. The MultiCap, at 10g, seals with an inner washer for a uniform seal and carries a tamper proof sticker across the cap surface. Just as with the bottles, further colour options across the cap range are available based on minimum order quantities.
Taken as a set, the four closures span the common cooler formats a South African distributor is likely to have in the field at any one time, which tends to be a mixed fleet rather than a single model. A supplier running older spiked pot units next to newer machines can match different caps to the same bottle instead of swapping the bottle to suit each cooler.
From preform to pallet
Behind the finished containers are the preforms. Plastic Innovations makes heavyweight PET preforms in 400g, 720g and 775g, then uses stretch blow moulding to turn them into large format bottles. By producing the preform, the bottle and the closure under one roof, the company keeps control of the neck finish, which is precisely where a seal either holds or fails.
The business also carries extensive warehouse capacity, which it ties to quick turnaround times and stock availability.
