NORTHERN CAPE – An alert on-duty police officer has successfully foiled a drug dealing operation and uncovered suspected stolen goods in Kimberley, leading to the arrest of a 40-year-old Nigerian national. The swift intervention resulted in the seizure of suspected illicit drugs, undisclosed cash, and high-value electronic devices, drawing official commendation from provincial police leadership.
The incident unfolded on Friday, 11 September 2026, at approximately 09:00 across two locations in Kimberley: West End and a residential property in Herlear. A police official attached to the Northern Cape Provincial Operational Response Services was on duty but briefly returned to his private residence to retrieve a forgotten wallet. Upon arrival, the officer observed a suspicious transaction taking place nearby and decisively intervened.
During the confrontation, the suspect was arrested after suspected illicit drugs, believed to be khat, were discovered in his possession. Authorities also seized an undisclosed amount of cash, suspected to be proceeds of crime, along with three cellphones during the initial intervention.
The officer immediately requested operational assistance, prompting a rapid response from Kimberley SAPS members. During subsequent investigations, the suspect was asked to identify his residential premises for further police enquiry. Although he initially provided a false address in New Park, he later disclosed his correct residence in Herlear.
A search of the Herlear premises yielded six additional cellphones and four Samsung tablets, with an estimated combined value of R160,000. A vehicle, believed to have been used in the commission of the crime, was also confiscated. These electronic devices are suspected to be stolen property, and investigations are ongoing to establish their origin and rightful ownership.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court in the near future, facing charges related to the possession of suspected illicit drugs and suspected stolen property. Authorities noted that additional charges may be instituted as the investigation progresses.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended the officer’s keen observation and decisive action. She emphasized that the South African Police Service (SAPS) remains resolute in implementing the SAPS Reset Agenda, which prioritizes intensifying crime prevention, disrupting criminal networks, and dismantling the illicit drug trade that fuels serious and violent crime.
Reiterating that the illicit drug trade has no place in communities, SAPS affirmed its commitment to remaining vigilant, proactive, and uncompromising in disrupting criminal activities. Every seizure and arrest contributes to dismantling the networks that supply drugs and exploit vulnerable populations, particularly youth.
