NAIROBI, Kenya — The Linda Mwananchi rally took Nairobi by storm as thousands of supporters turned out to hear movement leader William Sifuna at the historic Jacaranda Grounds. The massive political procession, which drew heavy police scrutiny and a temporary lockdown of the central business district, underscored the growing momentum of the brigade as it sets its sights on the country’s top seat.
The event kicked off following a morning church service at All Saints Cathedral. From there, the procession snaked through Nairobi’s Eastlands estates, moving through the city. The sheer volume of supporters brought parts of the city to a standstill, with observers noting the crowd’s energy and organization appeared to borrow heavily from the political playbook of the late Odinga.
Anticipating the massive turnout, Nairobi regional police commander Issa Mohamud had previously warned that political gatherings would not be permitted within the central business district. Citing concerns over potential altercations, looting, and destruction of property associated with past political events in the capital, authorities deployed anti-riot units, rapid deployment teams, and plainclothes officers to cordon off key entries to the CBD.
While the CBD largely remained calm, the security measures led to a brief standoff along Haile Selassie Avenue when police attempted to redirect the convoy toward Uhuru Highway to join Bunala Road. However, after approximately ten minutes, police yielded and allowed the procession to proceed peacefully toward its final destination. Authorities maintained a vigilant presence long after the caravan departed the city center to ensure the ongoing safety of local businesses and worshippers.
At the rally, William Sifuna, who has clearly indicated his intentions to run for president, delivered sharp criticism of President William Ruto’s administration. Sifuna labeled current policies as defective and punitive, pledging to prioritize and address the plight of the business community if elected to the top office.
Despite not having toured every region in the country, the Linda Mwananchi Brigade insists that their current support base is adequate to secure a first-round electoral victory. The movement has also issued a stern warning that they will not hesitate to challenge any foul play in court should it attempt to deny them a legitimate victory.
The Nairobi chapter of this nationwide engagement blitz carries weighty political significance. By successfully making the capital city the climax of their tour, the Linda Mwananchi movement has firmly planted its flag in a city that largely gives direction to the country’s broader political landscape.
