KWAZULU-NATAL — A 19-year-old Grade 10 learner, was fatally shot at the gates of an Intermediate School near Pinetown, west of Durban, in a brutal attack that has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for improved school security in the province.
According to police, the shooter ambushed the student as he arrived for classes this morning. The suspect, who is believed to have disembarked from the same taxi as the victim, was reportedly seen entering the school grounds alongside the Grade 10 learner. Witnesses allege that the attacker, dressed in school pants, a white shirt, and a face-concealing mask and hat, shot the unsuspecting teenager three times in the head. He was declared dead at the scene before the suspect fled.
The shooting has left the local community reeling in shock and anger. Local leaders have expressed heightened concerns regarding the vulnerability of educational institutions, with community members directing frustration toward the Department of Education. Residents cite ongoing discussions about school safety that have yet to translate into concrete, visible action on the ground.
In response to the tragedy, a spokesperson for the provincial Department of Education strongly condemned the murder and issued an urgent call for the speedy arrest of the suspect. The spokesperson emphasized that the department is committed to deploying psychosocial support teams to assist traumatized learners and teachers.
“This incident is a major setback in the work that we have done as a department to bring community leaders and all stakeholders together for the protection of learners and the infrastructure in our schools,” the spokesperson stated. They further assured the public that the department will remain in close contact with the school administration and the grieving family during this difficult time.
As a direct result of the shooting, The School was unable to commence teaching and learning activities for the day. The School Governing Body has declined to comment on the incident. Meanwhile, the victim’s family has publicly demanded justice for their son’s murder.
Police are currently piecing together the motive behind the killing, and the suspect remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
