LIMPOPO – Two foreign nationals have been arrested following a major R1.5 million dagga seizure at the Baobab Tollgate in Limpopo, marking a significant disruption to illegal drug trafficking operations within the Vhembe District.
The interception occurred on Friday, 18 September 2026, at approximately 11:00, when members of the Beitbridge Port of Entry Task team were conducting a routine roadblock. Officers stopped a white Toyota Hilux equipped with a canopy, which was driven by a 32-year-old man and accompanied by a 41-year-old passenger, both of whom are foreign nationals from Tanzania.
During the initial inspection, law enforcement officials grew suspicious when both individuals stated they did not have the keys to the canopy’s padlock. As a result, the officers instructed the suspects to proceed to the Beitbridge border facility for a more thorough examination.
Upon opening the canopy in the presence of the occupants, authorities discovered 33 bags containing 991.5 kilograms of dagga. The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of approximately R1.5 million.
Both suspects were immediately taken into custody. They are scheduled to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 September 2026, to face formal charges relating to dealing in dagga.
The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, commended the task team for their operational alertness and dedication. “Vigilance and teamwork remain our strongest weapons against drug trafficking,” Lieutenant General Scheepers stated, reinforcing the South African Police Service’s ongoing commitment to dismantling illicit drug networks in the province.
