TSHWANE – Six suspects have been arrested in Northern Tshwane for kidnapping, armed robbery, and carjacking following a swift and coordinated intervention by the Tshwane District Online Task Team. The operation successfully dismantled a criminal syndicate after a concerned citizen tracked his friends’ active digital footprint during a suspected robbery.
According to a spokesperson for the Tshwane District Online Task Team, the operation began on 20 September 2026 at approximately 12:15. During routine crime prevention patrols in the Winterveldt area, officers were approached by a man driving a blue Volkswagen Golf. The man reported that he had traveled to Winterveldt to locate his friends, whom he suspected were being robbed. He explained that during a phone call with one of the friends, he heard an unfamiliar voice in the background before the call abruptly terminated. Repeated attempts to re-establish contact were unsuccessful.
Crucially, the man noted that shortly before communication was lost, his friend had shared an active live location via WhatsApp. Acting on this critical information, task team members immediately accompanied the man to the indicated address at Nkuna Stand in Winterveldt.
Upon arrival, officers encountered approximately five African males. A search of the individuals revealed several cellular phones in their possession. The concerned citizen positively identified two of the devices as belonging to his friends. The suspects were then transported to the Loate South African Police Service (SAPS) station for further investigation.
At the police station, officials encountered two victims who had come forward to report a robbery. The victims positively identified some of the detained suspects as individuals who were present during the incident and confirmed that the two recovered cellular phones were their property.
While the preliminary investigation was underway, the task team received intelligence regarding a suspicious vehicle parked near a well-known supermarket in the area. Officers proceeded to the location and discovered a white Volkswagen Golf, which was allegedly stolen during the armed robbery.
Approximately four African males were observed near the vehicle. Upon noticing the police presence, the men attempted to flee on foot. Officers pursued the suspects and successfully apprehended two individuals, who were subsequently linked to the armed robbery.
In total, six suspects are now in custody facing charges related to kidnapping, armed robbery, and carjacking. A spokesperson for the Tshwane District Online Task Team confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing to determine if the suspects can be linked to additional criminal activities in the region.
