GAUTENG — Authorities have announced a major breakthrough in the Tembisa cemetery murder investigation, confirming that a suspect has been apprehended in Limpopo in connection with the brutal death of a local woman.
The victim, identified as Ms. Ntombifuthu Nxumalo, was discovered on Saturday, 26 September 2026, at Mooifontein Cemetery in the Vusimusi Section of Tembisa. According to initial crime scene reports, the deceased was found naked and suffering from severe head injuries. Investigators noted that stones were scattered around the body, suggesting she may have been stoned to death, though no visible stab wounds were present at the scene.
Preliminary investigations into the victim’s final movements revealed that Ms. Nxumalo had been drinking at a local tavern with a female acquaintance. She was last seen leaving the premises in the company of an unidentified man.
The timeline of the tragic incident aligns with harrowing accounts from the local community. Residents living in the vicinity of the cemetery reported hearing a woman screaming and pleading for her life at approximately 23:00 on the night of the incident.
Following the discovery of the body, detectives quickly traced the suspect to a residential address in Tembisa. However, upon arriving, they established that the individual had already fled and traveled to Limpopo.
In response, a highly coordinated, multidisciplinary task team was deployed. The joint operation included Crime Intelligence from the Ekurhuleni District, Tembisa South Detectives, and the Head Office Investigations Psychology Services (IPS). The team proceeded to Mohlabaneng Village in Limpopo, where they were joined by local officers from SAPS Bolobedu to assist in the manhunt.
The suspect was ultimately located asleep in his room and was taken into custody without further incident.
Following the successful operation, the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner publicly commended the multidisciplinary team. The spokesperson praised the swift response, collaborative effort, and dedicated investigative work that directly led to the rapid arrest of the suspect, bringing a measure of closure to the community and the victim’s family.
The suspect is expected to face formal charges in court as the investigation continues.
