In-house campaign that helped sell 91 freestanding homes at Bryanston Country Estate earns Silver at the 2026 WesBank New Generation Awards, alongside some of South Africa’s biggest brands and agencies
For decades, property developments in South Africa have been marketed with the same formula: a branded billboard, a glossy brochure, polished renders and a launch-day banner. When Craft Homes set out to launch Bryanston Country Estate, its in-house marketing team deliberately broke that formula and launched a campaign with no brand at all, just a painted wall.
Five weeks later, the campaign had drawn more than 6 400 qualified competition entries and over 800 visitors to the official launch. It generated more than R381million in residential sales, including 91 freestanding homes in the estate. And this month it earned a Silver Award for Best Online Competition by a Corporate at the 14th Annual WesBank New Generation Social & Digital Media Awards.
Earning attention
The team built the campaign around one question: what if a development earned people’s curiosity before it asked for their business? Craft Homes painted a prominent boundary wall at the corner of Grosvenor and Bryanston Drive bright red, with no logo or explanation. Each week, a new cryptic one-liner appeared on the wall, sparking debate in WhatsApp groups, on social media and on local radio.
A dedicated website and Facebook page turned that curiosity into participation by offering R50 000 to anyone who could guess who was behind the wall. When Tabasco and SPAR tried to claim the wall as their own, Craft Homes welcomed it and turned the hijacks into free amplification. Online, the campaign drew more than 370 000 TikTok views, a Twitter/X reach of over 252 000 and a Facebook reach of more than 380 000.
Before revealing itself, Craft Homes used the attention for good. An on-site drive with the South African National Blood Service recorded 123 blood donations and 47 stem cell registrations. The campaign ended with a key-drop event where five finalists tried their keys in a locked door. A local resident unlocked it and won R50 000 and Craft Homes was revealed as the developer behind the wall.
The Red Wall campaign represented a marketing investment of R1.31 million (excl. VAT). Against more than R381 million in sales generated, that is a return few traditional property campaigns can match, and it shows that creativity can be a commercial strategy rather than a risk.
Reinier van Loggerenberg, CEO of Craft Homes, says: “What I’m most proud of is that this came from our own people. Our marketing team understands our buyers, our neighbourhoods and our product better than anyone and that gave them the confidence to try something no one expected from a property developer.
“They also knew when to hand the story over to the community. The guesses, the jokes and the brands joining in all became part of the campaign, resulting in a blood drive that built real goodwill, not just awareness.”
Recognition on a national stage
At the awards, the residential developer’s in-house team stood alongside national brands such as Volkswagen, Dis-Chem, Telkom, Unilever and Vodacom, as well as leading agencies including Ogilvy.
Van Loggerenberg adds: “Being recognised in a room full of South Africa’s biggest brands and agencies means a great deal. Property marketing has followed the same playbook for a very long time. We wanted to show that a developer could build a brand and a community before building a single home. The sales showed it worked and this award shows the industry noticed.”
