Secunda Flying Squad Arrests Two in R60,000 Dagga Bust on R23

MPUMALANGA — Members of the Secunda Flying Squad have executed a major dagga arrest, intercepting two suspects and seizing an estimated R60,000 worth of the illegal substance during a targeted patrol in Mpumalanga. The successful operation highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to disrupt drug syndicates and intercept the flow of narcotics along the province’s major transport corridors.

The incident unfolded on Thursday, 2 October 2026, at approximately 08:30. Police officers were performing routine patrol duties along the R23 road, specifically monitoring the stretch between Morgenzon and Standerton. During the patrol, the tactical team spotted a silver-grey Nissan X-Trail carrying two occupants traveling in the direction of Standerton.

Acting on reasonable suspicion, the officers signaled the vehicle to stop. A subsequent search of the Nissan X-Trail yielded a significant haul: five black plastic bags packed with dagga. Law enforcement officials estimated the street value of the confiscated narcotics to be around R60,000.

Following the discovery, the two occupants of the vehicle—a 37-year-old and a 44-year-old—were immediately taken into custody. They have been formally charged with dealing in dagga. Both suspects remain in police custody and are expected to make their first appearance at the Standerton Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.

Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, publicly commended the tactical team for their intervention. Modise applauded the Secunda Flying Squad members for their vigilance and swift action, noting that such proactive measures are critical in arresting those who are dealing in dagga and protecting communities from the harmful impacts of the illegal drug trade within the province.
