KWAZULU-NATAL — Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy undertook a strategic visit to the Durban Gateway Terminal (DGT) as part of October Transport Month, focusing on the operational readiness and logistical efficiency of the country’s premier maritime hub.
During the inspection, Minister Creecy engaged directly with the terminal’s management team. She received comprehensive updates regarding current operational matters, signaling the government’s ongoing commitment to monitoring and streamlining South Africa’s vital supply chain infrastructure.
The Durban Gateway Terminal, historically recognized as Pier 2, holds a pivotal role in the national economy. As South Africa’s largest container terminal situated at the Port of Durban, the facility handles a massive volume of the country’s import and export freight. The facility’s evolution from its Pier 2 identity to the modern DGT reflects broader, ongoing efforts to modernize and optimize maritime logistics in the region.
The minister’s inspection aligns directly with the core objectives of October Transport Month. This annual initiative is designed to highlight the transport and logistics sector’s critical contribution to the economy, address systemic operational challenges, and promote more efficient transit networks across the country.
By visiting the DGT and consulting with terminal management, the Minister underscored the importance of port efficiency and container throughput in sustaining both national commerce and international trade corridors.
