KWAZULU-NATAL — A Turkish fugitive accused of severe sexual offenses and kidnapping has been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal, marking a significant milestone in international law enforcement cooperation. The 40-year-old suspect was apprehended in Isipingo following a coordinated operation to fulfill an extradition request from Turkish authorities.
The arrest was executed on a Thursday by the Fugitive Investigation Team of INTERPOL South Africa, according to a police spokesperson who released a statement on Saturday detailing the operation.
A spokesperson for the South African Police Service confirmed that the suspect is wanted by Turkish authorities to stand trial on a slate of serious charges. These include rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, malicious damage to property, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). The offenses were originally reported to the Eskişehir Police Department in Türkiye.
According to information provided by Turkish authorities, the allegations date back to 2010. The suspect allegedly kidnapped his then-fiancée, who was 22 years old at the time, and held her captive for several days, during which he repeatedly raped her. The police spokesperson further explained that the victim was subjected to severe physical abuse, including having her head repeatedly struck against a wall. This brutal assault reportedly resulted in permanent physical and psychological impairment for the victim.
Following the conclusion of the initial investigation into the crimes, the suspect fled his country of origin. He was subsequently traced by investigators to the coastal suburb of Isipingo.
An INTERPOL spokesperson noted that upon receiving the formal extradition request from Turkish authorities, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Pretoria obtained and executed a warrant in terms of Section 5(1)(b) of the relevant legislation, which directly resulted in the fugitive’s apprehension.
The suspect made his first court appearance before the Umlazi Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he faces a formal extradition application from the government of the Republic of Türkiye to the Republic of South Africa.
Highlighting the broader impact of the operation, the police spokesperson emphasized that law enforcement continues to strengthen international cooperation through INTERPOL structures. This collaboration is vital for tracing and arresting individuals who attempt to evade justice by fleeing across international borders.
This successful apprehension follows a similar international operation conducted by INTERPOL South Africa just last month. On Monday, 21 September 2026, a Turkish fugitive and former primary school principal was arrested in Cape Town. That suspect is also facing extradition in connection with charges of sexual assault, kidnapping, and intimidation involving a nine-year-old victim. Following his arrest, the former principal appeared before the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court.
