NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya is preparing to import two million tonnes of white maize as a severe drought devastates the North Rift Valley, the country’s primary agricultural region. The unprecedented dry spell has crippled the maize harvest in key growing areas, signaling significant challenges for national food security and prompting urgent intervention to stabilize the staple crop supply.
From a distance, the endless fields across Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia counties appear to paint a picture of agricultural abundance, dotted with green maize plants. However, a closer inspection reveals a silent disaster: the cobs are entirely empty. For generations, this region has served as the nation’s breadbasket, historically producing more than 40% of Kenya’s total maize supply. This season, that critical output has collapsed.
The agricultural failure is rooted in deceptive early growth. According to local agricultural assessments, the maize plants successfully germinated and grew, appearing healthy from afar. However, a prolonged dry spell struck during the critical stage of crop development, preventing the grain from properly forming inside the cobs. The resulting harvest is not only drastically undersized—measuring roughly a third of a normal yield—but the sparse grains that do exist are heavily infested due to the lack of rainfall.
For thousands of farming families, the devastation is measured in both financial ruin and lost hope. A local farmer noted that the failed season represents a massive financial blow. After investing heavily in seeds, fertilizer, labor, and machinery, farmers are left counting their losses with nothing to show for the season’s work.
The crisis is expected to trigger a dangerous chain reaction across the country’s agricultural sector. The managing director of the Kenya Seed Company warned that the current devastation will create severe food challenges in the coming year, particularly impacting commercial farmers who drive the nation’s food production. The spokesperson emphasized that, in their experience as a government officer, they have never witnessed a drought of this magnitude directly affecting farmers in such a catastrophic way.
Compounding the crisis, alternative crops traditionally relied upon for their resilience have also failed. Millet, which typically possesses a higher tolerance for dry conditions, struggled to survive. The crop only managed to reach its current stunted stage using the minimal rain received during germination, with no subsequent rainfall to sustain it.
As the reality of the failed harvest sets in, experts warn that a poor yield in the Rift Valley will inevitably translate to higher food prices across the nation. The situation underscores a growing vulnerability for rural communities whose livelihoods depend entirely on predictable rainfall. With increasingly erratic weather patterns making traditional farming more unpredictable, the push for two million tonnes of maize imports marks a critical, albeit urgent, step to shield the country from the deepening impacts of climate-driven agricultural instability.
