Some of the most meaningful acts of community support don’t happen through grand gestures. They happen when people show up consistently, listen to communities and work alongside the organisations already making a difference.
Across South Africa, community organisations are creating opportunities for children to learn, supporting families through healthcare and psychosocial services, protecting local environments and helping young people prepare for the future. Their work often goes unnoticed, yet it forms the foundation of stronger, more resilient communities.
Increasingly, businesses are recognising that meaningful corporate citizenship is not about leading change alone, but about building partnerships that strengthen the work already taking place in communities.
This is an approach Michelin has embraced by working alongside community organisations that understand the needs of the people they serve and are creating lasting impact every day.
In Vlakfontein, Johannesburg, Michelin employees spent time with the children of Khomanani Health Group, an organisation that has supported the community for more than 25 years through healthcare services, counselling and early childhood development programmes. Rather than simply delivering donations, employees joined the children in storytelling, arts and crafts and shared learning activities before donating stationery packs and treats.
A similar spirit of partnership continues through Michelin’s long-standing relationship with Sparrow Foundation School. For more than 12 years, the partnership has supported an environment where neurodiverse learners can thrive. This year, employees returned to repaint the Michelin Playground, originally created using repurposed Michelin tyres, helping preserve a space where children can learn, play and grow.
Investing in young people also means helping them imagine what comes next. During Youth Month, Michelin welcomed young people from MashUp Community Development and the People Matter Foundation to its offices for a Career Day, giving them the opportunity to engage with employees, explore different professions and gain insight into the world of work.
While each initiative addressed a different need, they shared a common thread: lasting impact is created through partnership, consistency and a willingness to respond to what communities need most.
“Every community has its own story, its own challenges and its own strengths,” says Amaury Vadon, Managing Director of Michelin Sub-Saharan Africa. “For us, the most meaningful partnerships are those built over time, where we can learn from one another and respond to what communities need most. Lasting impact is created through people working together, with a shared commitment to creating opportunities that make a difference for generations to come.”
Sometimes, the most powerful contribution a business can make is simply showing up -again and again for the communities working every day to create brighter futures.
