GAUTENG — Law enforcement authorities have successfully shut down an illegal gold refinery in Pretoria North, resulting in the arrest of two male suspects following a coordinated raid in Rooiwal. The bust highlights ongoing regional efforts to curb illicit mining and refining activities.
The breakthrough occurred after the South African Police Service (SAPS) K9 Unit acted on credible intelligence pointing to a clandestine refining operation on a smallholding located on Houtkaper Street. Before taking tactical action, officers conducted extensive surveillance and observation of the property over several days to validate the reports.
Once the information was thoroughly verified, investigators secured a search warrant. On Monday, 24 August 2026, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary response was deployed. The joint task force included personnel from SAPS Pretoria North, the Tshwane K9 Unit, Proshield Security, and GAC Security, who moved in to execute the warrant.
Upon entering the premises, authorities uncovered an active refining setup alongside specialized gold refinery equipment. Four individuals were present during the raid. While two male suspects were swiftly taken into custody, the remaining two managed to flee the scene and have not yet been apprehended.
Investigators seized various exhibits tied to the illicit operation, which have been formally logged at SAPS Pretoria North to aid the ongoing criminal investigation. The detained suspects are currently being held at the local station and are slated to face charges in the Pretoria North Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.
Brigadier Kushie Pietersen, Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, praised the collaborative effort. Brigadier Pietersen commended the participating units for their unwavering commitment, professionalism, and dedication in executing their duties to protect the community from illegal economic crimes.
Police continue to urge anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the two fleeing suspects to come forward.
