SOWETO, Gauteng — The African People’s Convention (APC) has officially solidified its leadership lineup for the upcoming local government elections by naming Mo-Afrika Mandla Mokoena as its Johannesburg mayoral candidate. The strategic reveal took place in Soweto, setting the stage for the party’s metropolitan campaign.
Addressing a gathering at the Doornkop Bus rank earlier today, APC leader Themba Godi formally introduced Mokoena to the public as the party’s chosen standard-bearer for the city.
Godi praised the newly minted candidate, asserting that Mokoena brings a vital combination of technical capability, administrative skills, and sharp political acumen to the table—qualities the party deems essential for steering South Africa’s economic hub.
Mokoena is no stranger to the party’s inner workings or the city’s municipal council. He currently serves a dual role as the APC’s Treasurer-General and as an active councillor within the Johannesburg metropolitan municipality, giving him a firm grasp of both national party operations and local governance.
The path to his candidacy was paved through rigorous internal deliberations. According to Godi, the party’s National Elections Committee engaged closely with APC office bearers to finalize the metro’s leadership ticket. Summarizing the consensus reached during these consultations, Godi stated, “We met, we discussed, and we agreed that for the city of Johannesburg, our mayoral candidate will be Mo-Afrika Mandla Mokoena.”
This strategic appointment positions the APC among a growing number of political formations rolling out their respective municipal candidates as the country marches toward the highly contested local government elections slated for November.
