GAUTENG – Gauteng police have arrested ten suspects and recovered nine firearms following a deadly shootout in Cleveland. The law enforcement operation unfolded on Monday, 21 September 2026, at approximately 19:36, resulting in one suspect being fatally shot and multiple serious criminal charges being opened.
According to official reports, police members were conducting routine patrols in the area when they observed a suspicious Hyundai H100 vehicle fitted with blue lights and a siren. The vehicle initially stopped as police approached but immediately drove off when officers attempted to intercept it. Law enforcement called for backup and continued to pursue the vehicle.
When the vehicle eventually came to a halt, three suspects allegedly exited and opened fire on the officers, prompting an immediate shootout. During the exchange of gunfire, two suspects fled the scene on foot, while a third suspect was fatally shot.
Following the confrontation, police searched the vehicle and discovered ten suspects inside. Authorities recovered a total of nine firearms, along with magazines and live ammunition. Gauteng Police Spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the details of the operation and the subsequent recovery of the weapons.
Cleveland police have officially opened cases of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The arrested suspects, aged between 30 and 54, are expected to appear before the court soon. Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
