MOSSEL BAY, Western Cape — Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has officially kicked off the party’s three-day election campaign in the Garden Route, beginning his political trail in Mossel Bay. Highlighting the municipality’s strong track record, Hill-Lewis positioned the coastal town as a flagship example of the DA’s governance model ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.
The DA currently governs the Mossel Bay Local Municipality and Hessequa Local Municipality with outright majorities, while maintaining coalition governments in the George and Bitou municipalities. This strategic tour is designed to reinforce the party’s local governance achievements and rally voter support across the region.
Speaking to supporters, Geordin Hill-Lewis praised Mossel Bay’s consistent performance in local governance. He described the town as a “shining example of a well-run, excellently run municipality in the whole country,” noting that it consistently ranks at the top of best-run municipalities in South Africa.
“When you drive around here, you can really see why,” Hill-Lewis stated. “All the services are working. The streets are clean and neat and tidy. There’s not a single service delivery problem. This is a tremendous DA success story.”
While local residents echoed positive sentiments regarding the municipality’s service delivery and expressed a strong desire for the DA to continue governing Mossel Bay, community members also highlighted pressing local challenges. Residents pointed to crime as a critical issue that still needs to be addressed, specifically citing concerns over robberies, assaults, and public altercations.
Following his initial stop in Mossel Bay, Hill-Lewis is scheduled to head to George. The DA Federal Leader will continue his campaign trail in Wilderness over the next couple of days, aiming to address both the successes and the ongoing community concerns across the Garden Route region.
