Illegal Hunting Arrest in Sekhukhune: Zimbabwean National Caught Poaching Sable Antelope

LIMPOPO — A major illegal hunting arrest in Sekhukhune has resulted in the detention of a 34-year-old Zimbabwean national, Gift Duba, who is facing multiple charges related to wildlife poaching and immigration violations. The intelligence-led operation culminated in the recovery of two highly valued sable antelopes and exposed an illegal biltong production operation in the Groblersdal area.

Intelligence-Led Operation Leads to Arrest
The crackdown began on Wednesday, 22 October 2026, when the Sekhukhune Tactical and Investigation Team acted on tip-offs regarding suspected illegal hunting activities at a farm located on Vaalfontein Road, within the Groblersdal policing area.

Operationalizing the intelligence, police tracked the suspects’ movements to Bloompoort village, specifically targeting a homestead in Monageng. Upon arriving at the premises, officers conducted a thorough search and discovered a quantity of meat stored in a refrigerator. Authorities suspected this meat was directly linked to a nearby farm where wildlife had recently been targeted.

Poaching Scene and Illegal Biltong Production Uncovered
Following the discovery at the homestead, investigators proceeded to the farm on Vaalfontein Road. There, they uncovered the bodies of two dead sable antelopes, identified as old bucks, with a combined estimated value of R44,000.

Evidence at the scene indicated that the animals had been caught in snares and killed by the suspects on Tuesday, 21 October 2026. Furthermore, police found that portions of the carcasses had already been butchered. The meat was cut into strips and hung from trees to dry for the production of biltong. Investigators noted that the suspects’ strategy was to leave the meat drying until it lost moisture and became lighter, making it significantly easier to transport away from the scene once collected.

Court Appearance and Legal Proceedings
Following the discovery, Duba was immediately apprehended. He was officially charged with illegal hunting, possession of game farm meat, and contravening the Immigration Act as an illegal immigrant.

The suspect made his first appearance at the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 October 2026. He was remanded in police custody, and his case has been postponed to Monday, 26 October 2026. The upcoming hearing will focus on his bail application and allow for further police investigations into the poaching syndicate.

Police Commend Swift Tactical Response
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, publicly commended the Sekhukhune Tactical and Investigation Team for their swift and effective response to the intelligence.

Police investigations into the broader network and the origins of the poaching operation are currently continuing.
