Jericho Police Nab Trio in Connection with Sand Mining Site Hold-Up and Firearm Seizure

Law enforcement officials in Jericho have taken three men into custody following a multi-charge investigation linked to an armed robbery, assault, and illegal firearm incident at an unauthorized sand mining operation.

The operation, executed on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, was triggered by actionable intelligence indicating that suspects had forcibly entered a site associated with illegal sand mining and allegedly abducted an African male individual.

Later that day, authorities were informed that the alleged victim had escaped captivity and reported to the Jericho South African Police Service (SAPS) station. In a formal statement, the victim recounted being threatened with a firearm, physically assaulted, and deprived of cash by unidentified perpetrators.

Police investigators, accompanied by the victim, returned to the reported location. Upon arrival, officers observed a group of African males present at the scene. The victim positively identified three individuals as those involved in the incident, resulting in their immediate arrest.

A search of the area led to the recovery and seizure of a licensed firearm and associated ammunition. The three detainees have been formally charged with pointing a firearm, common assault, and armed robbery. They are scheduled to make their first appearance before the Jericho Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, Acting Provincial Commissioner for the North West, praised the responding officers for their rapid deployment, effective use of intelligence, and inter-unit cooperation.

“This outcome demonstrates the value of community-informed policing and the dedication of our members to addressing violent and organised crime,” said Major General Naidoo.

The North West Provincial SAPS continues to prioritise the disruption of illegal mining operations and violent criminal enterprises. Members of the public are encouraged to share credible information with local police to support ongoing safety initiatives.
