Two serving police officers from KwaZulu-Natal will appear in court on corruption charges following an investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.
The officers, aged 41 and 42, were arrested on Thursday, 28 May 2026, in Pietermaritzburg. The allegations trace back to a common assault case originally filed at Alexandra Road Police Station on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
According to police records, on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, the two officers—accompanied by the complainant from the assault case—visited the workplace of the suspect. After placing the suspect under arrest, the officers allegedly demanded R1,000 as bail money.
Unable to produce cash immediately, the suspect arranged payment through his employer, with authorization to deduct the amount from his salary.
Following his release by the court, the suspect requested clarification regarding the bail funds and was instructed to visit the police station. It was there that he formally lodged a corruption complaint against the two officers.
On Friday, 22 May 2026, one of the implicated officers reportedly visited the complainant’s workplace in an attempt to return the R1,000. He also requested that the complainant withdraw the corruption case against both officers. The complainant refused to accept the money or retract the complaint.
Acting on the complaint, members of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit arrested both officers and formally charged them with corruption. The accused are scheduled to make their first appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 29 May 2026.
