MPUMALANGA — Cross-border smugglers faced a major setback at the Oshoek border post, where a targeted law enforcement operation resulted in a massive Mpumalanga dagga seizure worth millions. The early-morning interception successfully blocked a major consignment of illicit narcotics from entering the country’s supply chain.
The high-value bust occurred on Monday, 17 August 2026, under the cover of darkness. At approximately 01:30, police officers executing routine search duties on the arrival side of the port—processing traffic flowing in from the Kingdom of Eswatini—flagged down a Volvo horse and trailer for inspection.
Upon searching the cargo area, authorities uncovered 49 large bags tightly packed with suspected dagga. The confiscated narcotics weighed in at a staggering 630 kilograms, carrying an estimated street value of more than four million rand. The driver of the vehicle was immediately apprehended at the scene and taken to the Hartebeeskop SAPS, where he remains in detention.
According to a SAPS Spokesperson, the impounded Volvo truck carries Eswatini registration plates and is reportedly registered to a commercial logistics company operating within the neighboring kingdom. The suspect is slated to make an appearance before the relevant court to answer to charges of drug dealing.
While the arrest marks a significant victory for border security, detectives are now focused on the broader network behind the smuggling ring.
“Police investigations are continuing to establish the origin and intended destination of the consignment, as well as to determine whether other persons may be linked to the illegal drug trade,” the **SAPS Spokesperson** confirmed, indicating that authorities are actively hunting for syndicate members higher up the chain of command.
To prevent future breaches, law enforcement is doubling down on transit security. The SAPS Spokesperson reiterated the organization’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the trafficking and distribution of illegal substances, noting that police will aggressively intensify tactical operations, vehicle searches, and surveillance along major national routes and international border zones.
