MPUMALANGA — A 48-year-old Mpumalanga farmer is facing serious legal trouble following a major seizure of unlicensed firearms in the Badfontein area. Andriaan Burger was taken into police custody and subsequently remanded by a magistrate after authorities uncovered a hidden cache of weapons and live ammunition at his rural property.
The successful apprehension took place on Tuesday, 04 August 2026, stemming from a targeted, intelligence-driven operation. Acting on actionable information regarding a man stockpiling unregistered weapons at a specific address in Klipspruit, operatives from the Lydenburg K9 Unit and the Lydenburg Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) Unit mobilized quickly. Before approaching the farm, the tactical teams secured a mandatory search and seizure warrant from the Mashishing Magistrate’s Court.
Upon executing the warrant, law enforcement uncovered a dangerous arsenal. According to Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the following items were confiscated from the premises:
– One .22 hunting rifle
– One .38 Special revolver
– 416 rounds of live ammunition for the hunting rifle
– 51 rounds of live ammunition for the revolver
When confronted by the arresting officers, the suspect could not produce valid firearm licenses for either weapon. Due to this failure to provide legal documentation, Burger was immediately detained on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
He subsequently appeared before the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 05 August 2026. The magistrate opted to remand the suspect in custody, pushing the next phase of the legal proceedings and potential bail applications to 11 August 2026.
