FREE STATE — Law enforcement authorities have apprehended a Zastron rape suspect following a harrowing late-night abduction that ended in a violent sexual assault at a local athletic facility. The 29-year-old male, hailing from New Location in Matlakeng, is slated to make his first appearance in the Zastron Magistrate’s Court to answer to serious charges stemming from the weekend attack.
According to Police Spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba, the terrifying sequence of events unfolded on Friday, 31 July 2026, just before midnight. A 24-year-old resident of the Itumeleng Section in Matlakeng was walking home when his route took him past a bottle store in the Kgotsong area. It was there that the assailant allegedly stepped out of the shadows, brandishing a knife.
The attacker reportedly pressed the blade against the young man’s throat, issuing strict warnings against making a sound under the threat of being stabbed. Forced into compliance, the victim was made to march from the Kgotsong streets to the nearby Lere-La-Thuto Sports Ground, situated in the Kanana Location of Zastron.
Once isolated at the sports facility, the suspect allegedly carried out the sexual violation. However, the presence of pedestrians in the vicinity provided a crucial window of opportunity. The victim managed to shout out for assistance, startling the attacker and allowing him to break free. Despite the suspect’s attempts to chase him down, the 24-year-old successfully evaded capture and fled the scene.
Officials noted a disturbing detail in the ongoing investigation: the assailant is reportedly known to the victim. The physical struggle left the survivor with notable injuries, including a laceration caused by the knife and a distinct bite wound.
Following a swift response, police successfully tracked and arrested the 29-year-old New Location resident, removing him from the streets pending his judicial proceedings.
