BARBERTON, MPUMALANGA — The ongoing Mpumalanga voter registration exercise is unfolding against a backdrop of civic unrest, with Barberton service delivery protests highlighting deep-seated community frustrations. While electoral officials work to boost citizen participation across the region, local residents are simultaneously demonstrating to demand the reversal of municipal mergers in order to address crumbling local infrastructure.
Electoral Turnout and Municipal Unrest
Electoral authorities in the province are expecting a surge in citizens visiting polling stations to verify their details and officially register. Despite a sluggish beginning at various locations, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) maintains a positive outlook on eventual participation numbers as the window continues.
However, the democratic exercise is being heavily overshadowed by unrest in Barberton. Demonstrators are demanding the restoration of the Umjindi Local Municipality. Locals argue that basic services—specifically water supply, road networks, and general infrastructure—have severely deteriorated since Umjindi was merged into the City of Mbombela in 2016. Despite these vocal complaints, the Municipal Demarcation Board has refused to alter the current boundaries, keeping the area under Mbombela’s jurisdiction.
Local Leadership Responds to Community Grievances
Addressing the seemingly low physical turnout at polling stations, the ANC representative for Ward 44 explained that digital alternatives are the primary reason. According to the councillor, a significant portion of the electorate has already utilized the online registration portal, thereby minimizing the need for physical queues.
On the topic of municipal performance, the Ward 44 official defended the local track record, pointing to an active service delivery campaign running from June 7 to June 25. This initiative is actively tackling road maintenance, including regraveling and pothole repairs, alongside fixing broken streetlights. When pressed on the high rates of joblessness among the youth, the councillor framed it as a broader national challenge rather than a localized administrative failure.
Security Threats and Illegal Mining
Beyond municipal services, the Barberton community is grappling with severe security threats. Residents have voiced urgent concerns regarding escalating crime rates and the proliferation of illegal mining operations in the area. To combat these illicit activities, community members are stressing the necessity for strong collaboration between local leadership, residents, and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the crisis.
