A 21-year-old man remains in police custody and is slated to appear in the Calvinia Magistrate’s Court following a swift bust targeting the illegal harvesting of highly valuable, endangered plants.
The arrest unfolded on June 6, 2026, at approximately 16:30, after rangers at a local nature reserve spotted a suspicious individual and immediately alerted the Nieuwoudtville South African Police Service (SAPS).
Law enforcement officers responded rapidly to the scene. Upon intercepting the 21-year-old male suspect, police discovered he was in possession of a substantial haul of endangered, protected plant species. He was arrested on the spot and formally charged with violating the Northern Cape Nature Conservation Act 9 of 2009.
The local District Commissioner publicly praised the SAPS members and rangers for their rapid and effective response to the environmental crime.
Using the successful operation as a deterrent, the Commissioner issued a stark warning to poachers and environmental criminals. He emphasized that the unique biodiversity of the Namakwa region is a strictly protected natural heritage belonging to the local communities, declaring unequivocally that the area’s flora and fauna will not be plundered.
The suspect will remain behind bars until his court proceedings.
