New Operator Sizekhaya Launches Reformed National Lottery with Live Draws and Enhanced Winner Support

South Africa’s National Lottery has entered a new chapter under the management of Sizekhaya, which officially assumed control on June 1 with commitments to transparency, digital advancement, and strengthened community contributions.

Chief Operating Officer Fundi Sithebe outlined the operator’s priorities, emphasizing that the transition followed roughly a year of preparation to ensure operational readiness. The launch coincided with a notable milestone: a 128 million rand PowerBall prize claimed by a winner from KwaZulu-Natal—the first major jackpot under Sizekhaya’s management.

“We started off with a bang,” Sithebe said, expressing confidence that the operator would continue to grow in strength and impact.

Live Draws Return to Restore Public Confidence

In a significant move toward accountability, Sizekhaya has reinstated live televised lottery draws on SABC1 and SABC2 at 9:00—the first such broadcasts since 2016. The decision addresses long-standing public concerns about draw integrity.

“It’s important for us to show the country… there’s actually a machine that generates these numbers. It’s not somebody sitting in a dark room,” Sithebe stated.

Player experience has also been recalibrated. The operator introduced cascading jackpots and adjusted the number format to improve winning probabilities by approximately 30%. These changes respond to feedback that extended jackpot rollovers—sometimes lasting 12 to 14 weeks—had diminished player enthusiasm.

“South Africans were asking: is it worth playing?” Sithebe noted. “We needed to stay true to our promises but make sure South Africans love and really enjoy a great lottery experience.”

Comprehensive Care for Prize Winners

Sizekhaya has established a structured protocol for prize claims. Any winnings above 50,000 rand require in-person verification at an approved payment center or regional office, where tickets are authenticated and purchase details confirmed.

Beyond verification, the operator provides dedicated support services. Winners receive access to psychological counseling to help navigate the emotional impact of sudden wealth. “It’s a traumatic event—but traumatic in a good way,” Sithebe explained. “Imagine waking up 50 million rands richer. The emotional process requires guidance.”

Financial planning assistance is also integrated into the process. Sizekhaya emphasizes building generational wealth rather than enabling short-term expenditure. Funds are disbursed tax-free and in a single lump sum only after verification, counseling, and financial guidance are complete. The recent 128 million rand winner from KwaZulu-Natal underwent this full support pathway.

Channeling Proceeds Toward National Development

Sithebe described the National Lottery as “South Africa’s largest philanthropic engine,” underscoring that operational improvements directly enhance funding for social causes. Lottery proceeds support NGOs, educational institutions, and community development initiatives across the country.

“South Africa really needs the National Lottery to be the best that it can be so that we can see maximum returns going into our causes,” Sithebe said.

Looking ahead, Sizekhaya plans to expand digital platforms for greater player convenience, strengthen retail partnerships, and develop inclusive campaigns aimed at engaging a new generation of participants. The operator reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining rigorous standards of transparency while maximizing the social return on every ticket sold.
