WESTERN CAPE — A massive R11 million drug seizure on the N2 highway in Riviersonderend has led to the detention of a foreign national following a targeted law enforcement operation. Western Cape authorities uncovered a substantial cache of illicit substances during a late-night vehicle inspection, marking a significant disruption to regional narcotics trafficking.
According to provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, officers initiated a routine stop-and-search operation along the N2 route at approximately 22:35 on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. During the checkpoint, a black Nissan Tiida was flagged down for a thorough inspection.
A search of the vehicle’s boot revealed a concealed trove of illegal narcotics. Authorities confiscated 87 packets of Mandrax tablets, 16 packets of uncut crystal meth, and two solid blocks of cocaine. The combined street value of the intercepted contraband is officially estimated at R11 million.
Following the discovery, a 37-year-old foreign national male was immediately taken into custody on charges of drug possession. Constable Gwala confirmed that once the formal charges are processed, the accused is scheduled to make his initial appearance before the Caledon Magistrate’s Court.
This interception highlights continued police efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks operating along major national transport corridors.
