FREE STATE — A major Zastron drug bust has successfully disrupted a localized narcotics pipeline, resulting in the apprehension of three individuals allegedly fueling the crystal meth and mandrax trade in Matlakeng. The coordinated law enforcement action marks a significant victory for the Free State, effectively severing a supply chain that authorities say is directly linked to broader community offenses.
The apprehended group, consisting of two men aged 42 and 60, alongside a 42-year-old woman, is slated to appear before the Zastron Magistrates’ Court to answer to formal charges of drug dealing.
The suspects were taken into custody during the early hours of Wednesday, 26 August 2026. The apprehension was executed by a specialized, multidisciplinary task force featuring the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), the Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Crime Intelligence (CI) under the official banner of #OperationDiamond.
Undercover Sting Secures Evidence
The groundwork for this Zastron drug bust was laid in 2025. Crime Intelligence operatives pinpointed the trio after receiving credible tips regarding the escalating distribution of mandrax and crystal meth in the Zastron area. To build an airtight case, investigators orchestrated multiple simulated transactions, during which the suspects allegedly completed illicit sales to undercover operatives.
Disrupting the Cycle of Violent Crime
Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, Free State Provincial Head of the Hawks, emphasized that disrupting this specific pipeline is crucial for regional safety. She noted that the steady availability of illicit narcotics directly fuels secondary offenses, including gangsterism and violent crime.
“Cutting the supply of drugs to the town of Matlakeng will help deal with related crimes,” Major General Bokaba stated, highlighting the strategic focus on intercepting narcotics before they reach the streets.
She further praised the seamless, collaborative synergy between the Hawks and Crime Intelligence, noting that this joint operational approach proved instrumental in the successful execution of the sting and the subsequent removal of the suspects from the community.
