GROBLERSBRUG – A Zimbabwean national remains in police custody following a major tobacco smuggling interception at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry, where authorities seized illicit manufactured tobacco valued at approximately R3.8 million. The 45-year-old suspect, identified as Shumba Munetsi, made his initial appearance at the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, after being apprehended by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing unit.
The bust occurred on Monday, 24 August 2026, at approximately 18:42. SAPS officers conducting routine border security duties halted a Volvo truck pulling an LP gas trailer at the border’s arrival gate. While the driver initially declared the cargo as standard gas, a preliminary check raised suspicions, prompting officers to order a comprehensive, secondary search of the vehicle.
The detailed inspection uncovered a cleverly hidden hatch beneath the trailer’s chassis. Confronted with the discovery, the driver reportedly confessed that the compartment did not hold gas, but was instead engineered to secretly transport tobacco products. Upon opening the concealed space, officers uncovered 521 plastic bags holding roughly 7,294 kilograms of suspected manufactured tobacco.
The intercepted contraband carries an estimated value of R3.8 million. Furthermore, law enforcement impounded both the Volvo truck and the LP gas trailer, which together hold an estimated asset value of R1.8 million. During his court appearance, Munetsi’s case was deferred to Monday, 31 August 2026, to allow for a formal bail application, and he was remanded in custody in the interim.
Detectives are currently pursuing active leads to trace the exact origin and final destination of the illicit cargo. The ongoing probe also aims to uncover whether broader criminal syndicates or additional accomplices are involved in this cross-border smuggling operation.
Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, the Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, praised the sharp vigilance and operational excellence of the SAPS Border Policing team in unearthing the hidden shipment. Lieutenant General Scheepers emphasized that the police service will maintain and escalate its tactical operations at border posts and strategic transit routes to dismantle illicit trade networks and shield the national economy from organized criminal enterprises.
