School Taxi Fire in Amouti, KZN: Young Learners Escape Engulfed Vehicle

KWAZULU-NATAL — A potentially tragic school taxi fire in Amouti, KwaZulu-Natal, was averted this Monday morning thanks to the swift actions of a driver who managed to evacuate all passengers before the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

Swift Evacuation Prevents Casualties
The incident unfolded at approximately 06:52 when a member of the public contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) to request emergency assistance. A red Toyota Hiace, carrying a full load of young students, had caught fire while traveling toward the main road.

According to a spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the driver noticed the fire developing while in transit. Acting quickly, the driver managed to pull the minibus over to the side of the road and rapidly evacuated all the occupants to safety before the blaze could spread to the passenger cabin.

Passengers and Fire Origin
The taxi was transporting a full complement of young scholars, specifically learners from Grade 1 to Grade 4, as well as one creche learner. The children on board ranged in age from 6 to 14 years old.

Preliminary assessments at the scene indicate that the fire originated in the engine compartment of the vehicle. The RUSA spokesperson noted that the driver was unable to determine the exact mechanical failure or root cause that sparked the engine fire.

Medical Assessment and Aftermath
Fortunately, the rapid evacuation ensured that no serious injuries were sustained. However, two minors who inhaled smoke during the incident were assessed by emergency personnel on the scene. No other injuries were reported among the passengers or the driver.

Following the incident, logistical arrangements were made to ensure the children reached their destinations. Some of the learners were transported to their respective schools in an alternative taxi, while others remained at the scene with responding authorities.

Investigations into the exact cause of the engine compartment fire are ongoing.
