PRETORIA, GAUTENG — As South Africans prepare to exercise their democratic rights, Home Affairs offices are open nationwide this weekend to facilitate Smart ID collections and applications in direct support of the national voter registration drive.
To align with the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s dedicated Voter Registration Weekend, the Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that every single branch across the country will operate on both Saturday and Sunday. This strategic extension of operating hours is designed to give citizens ample time to either apply for a new Smart ID Card or pick up one that has already been processed.
A Critical Push for Civic Participation
Speaking to the public on Friday, Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Leon Schreiber emphasized the critical nature of this initiative, framing the extended hours as a vital enabler for civic engagement.
“This weekend presents an important opportunity for South Africans to ensure that they are ready to exercise one of their most fundamental democratic rights. By extending operating hours nationwide during Voter Registration Weekend, Home Affairs is making it easier for citizens to obtain the Smart ID Cards they need to register and participate in our democracy,” Dr. Schreiber stated.
Clearing the Collection Backlog
The weekend push comes at a crucial time for the department, which currently faces a significant backlog of uncollected documents. Official figures reveal that more than 370,000 Smart ID Cards are currently sitting at Home Affairs branches nationwide, waiting for their owners to collect them.
Minister Schreiber used the platform to issue a direct call to action for those with pending documents, highlighting the broader utility of the identity book beyond just casting a ballot.
“We encourage all South Africans who still need a Smart ID Card, or who have been notified that their Smart ID Card is ready for collection, to make use of this opportunity. An ID is not only essential for participating in our democracy, but also serves as a gateway to opportunities, services and economic participation,” the Minister explained.
