South Africa’s Porous Borders Under Fire as Undocumented Immigration Sparks Nationwide Protests

With hundreds of thousands marching over undocumented immigration, North West residents and MEC Wessels Morweng demand strict border enforcement and mass deportations.

NORTH WEST — The escalating issue of undocumented immigration in South Africa has triggered massive nationwide demonstrations, placing an intense spotlight on the vulnerabilities of the nation’s porous land borders. As hundreds of thousands of citizens marched this past Tuesday, the widespread unrest has amplified public demands for rigorous border security and the strict enforcement of immigration laws.

Despite assurances from the national government that its primary objective is to respect and enforce immigration statutes, widespread skepticism persists among the public. Many citizens are convinced that state control over the borders has faltered. In the North West province, residents have voiced specific anxieties regarding the security protocols at local ports of entry. Locals allege that the very personnel tasked with border management are complicit in the crisis, accusing officials of allowing undocumented individuals to cross freely without the required paperwork.

This surge in irregular migration has prompted localized law enforcement actions, with authorities recently apprehending more than 120 undocumented immigrants within the North West province.

Addressing the mounting pressure, North West Community Safety MEC Wessels Morweng conceded that irregular migration has become a severe burden on the region. MEC Morweng emphasized the necessity of a decisive response, advocating for the removal of individuals lacking legal status.

“We need to deal with the situation,” MEC Morweng stated. “If there are people in the country that are not legally documented, those people must be deported back to their country so that we clean our system and we can be able to ease the burden that we are experiencing as a result of the people that are in our country through the means that are not permitted by the law.”

He firmly added that there is no valid justification for entering the country illegally, noting that as the nation navigates 2026, the focus must remain on resolving these systemic failures and ensuring legal compliance.

The civil pressure shows no signs of waning. The Match and Match Movement, a prominent organizing body behind the demonstrations, has issued a strict ultimatum: they will continue to march every Thursday until every undocumented immigrant has been removed from the country.

In response to the swelling crowds and ongoing civil unrest, government authorities have pledged to continuously intensify their operational efforts to secure the borders and comprehensively address the undocumented immigration crisis.
