FREE STATE — Authorities have arrested a 24-year-old step-father in connection with the gruesome murder of a 4-year-old boy, following the tragic discovery of the toddler’s remains at a local cemetery.
Law enforcement officers responded to a distressing crime scene on Sunday, 10 August 2026, at the Old Cemetery in Malebogo. According to the provincial Police Spokesperson, the child’s body was found hidden beneath blankets and curtains, bearing severe and traumatic injuries to the head.
Forensic experts from the Welkom-based Criminal Record Center were immediately summoned to process the burial site and gather critical evidence. Following the discovery, a murder docket was officially opened at the Herzogville police station, launching a fast-tracked preliminary investigation into the toddler’s death.
The investigation quickly led officers to a residential address in Malebogo, where the victim was known to reside. Upon searching the premises, detectives uncovered bloodstained fragments of the blankets and curtains used to wrap the child, alongside clothing presumed to belong to the deceased 4-year-old.
The Police Spokesperson confirmed that the 24-year-old step-father was swiftly identified and taken into custody as the primary suspect in the brutal killing.
The accused is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Herzogville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, where he will face formal charges of murder. Authorities have indicated that the docket remains open as forensic analysis and further investigations continue.
