CAPE TOWN — On Friday, June 12, 2026, a 28-year-old man was arrested at Cape Town International Airport for the possession of 150 live venomous scorpions.
The arrest was the result of an intelligence-driven operation conducted jointly by the Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit and Cape Nature. Acting on information regarding an individual in possession of scorpions at the airport, authorities obtained a description of the suspect and apprehended him.
During a search of the suspect’s luggage, officers discovered 150 live scorpions concealed between his clothing. He was subsequently arrested under the Nature and Environmental Ordinance Act for the possession of a wild animal.
The confiscated scorpions have been transported to a designated haven for safekeeping. The monetary value of the specimens is yet to be determined.
The suspect is scheduled to appear at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 15, 2026.
